In today’s world, many women grapple with defining their identities beyond traditional roles and establishing healthy boundaries in their personal relationships. Understanding the roots of these challenges can be deeply transformative and healing for the heart. In a recent podcast discussion on Seeds For Your Marriage between Melissa Lapin and Trisha Walker, they explored these issues and offered insightful perspectives that can resonate with many.

Created Perfect and the Quest for Alignment

“We’re not created wrong. We are created perfect. Because Jesus was slain before the beginning of time. So I am perfect. I just got to figure out what that looks like and align my process, my thoughts with that,” Melissa shared. This powerful statement reminds us that our imperfections and struggles don’t define us. By humbling ourselves and seeking guidance from the Lord, we can align our actions and thoughts with His.

“For by the one offering He has perfected forever and completely cleansed those who are being sanctified [bringing each believer to spiritual completion and maturity].”

Hebrews 10:14 (AMP)

The Struggle with Boundaries

Trisha delved into the specific struggles many women face with boundaries. “There’s certain relationships from my past that are triggering me and these relationships that I’m finding that are just exploding,” she explained. For many women, the difficulty in setting boundaries stems from never being taught how to recognize and enforce them. Trisha highlighted an essential realization: “I am powerful, I’m a powerful person.” Understanding and believing in one’s power through the Holy Spirit is the first step towards establishing and maintaining boundaries.

“[we pray that you may be] strengthened and invigorated with all power, according to His glorious might, to attain every kind of endurance and patience with joy;”

Colossians 1:11 (AMP)

The Impact of a Male-Dominated Society

Melissa expanded on the historical and societal context behind these struggles. “A lot of that, sadly, comes from a male-dominated society. And no, I’m not a feminist, but… who runs everything? Men. So men are going to make the rules.” This societal structure often relegates women to predefined roles, oftentimes limiting the opportunities/paths women are called to walk in. In many religious contexts, this issue is further compounded by wrong interpretations of scripture that restrict women’s roles and voices where they aren’t able to preach or operate in certain roles in the church.

“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is liberty [emancipation from bondage, true freedom]. 18 And we all, with unveiled face, continually seeing as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are progressively being transformed into His image from [one degree of] glory to [even more] glory, which comes from the Lord, [who is] the Spirit.”

2 Corinthians 3:17-18 (AMP)

The Identity Crisis

Melissa’s observations about women’s identities are telling: “We have generations upon generations of powerless, identity less women.” Often, women define themselves by their relationships or roles, particularly as mothers. “When you ask a woman to tell me about herself, the first thing she says is, ‘I’m a mom.’ But we are more than that.” This identity crisis can leave women feeling lost once their primary role, such as parenting, is no longer their main focus.

Healing Heart and Rediscovering Self

Healing the heart starts with recognizing and aligning our identity with the truths that God says about us. While parenting and other roles can be fulfilling, it is crucial to explore and embrace all facets of who we are. Melissa’s experience of coaching women highlights this need: “I’ve counseled so many women who, the last kid graduates high school, and they’re utterly lost.”

Empowerment comes from acknowledging that while traditional roles are significant, they do not wholly define us. We must explore, understand, and establish our boundaries, and most importantly, rediscover our uniqueness and who we are as a woman of God.

The journey towards empowerment and healing is ongoing and deeply personal. By understanding these challenges and seeking alignment with the truths God says about us, we can heal our hearts and empower our walk as a woman of God. It’s time to break free from the confines of predefined roles and societal expectations, embracing a future where every woman knows and honors her true identity.
