Our Story
How We Learned to Break the Cycle
For years, our marriage felt like it was going in circles. We cared deeply about each other, but the same conversations kept repeating. The same misunderstandings, the same tension, the same hurts — over and over again.
At times, life only made things harder.
Our marriage was shaped by
Financial pressure
Family trauma
Addiction
Betrayal
Seasons of deep uncertainty
There were moments when it felt like we were carrying more than we knew how to handle.
For the first twelve years of our marriage, we often felt stuck in patterns we didn’t fully understand.
We weren’t trying to hurt each other.
We just didn’t know how to change what kept happening between us.
We Started Seeing the Patterns
We started to realize that our struggles weren’t just about the issues we were arguing about — they were about the patterns shaping how we responded to each other.
When those patterns became visible, things began to change.
We learned how to communicate differently.
How to respond instead of react.
How to rebuild trust.
How to extend forgiveness while creating healthier boundaries.
It wasn’t immediate, and it wasn’t easy.
But it was possible.
Today, after more than 30 years of marriage, our relationship looks very different.
Not because we avoided difficulty — but because we learned how to navigate it differently.
And now, we help other couples do the same.
Most couples don’t realize they’re caught in a relationship pattern.
But once you can see the pattern, you can begin to change it.
That’s why we created the Relationship Patterns Assessment.
Our Marriage Didn’t Start as a Success Story
We didn’t begin our marriage with a polished formula or a perfect relationship.
Like many couples, our story began with excitement and hope — but it quickly became clear that marriage would require far more humility, growth, and perseverance than we expected.
Our wedding day itself set the tone for what was to come. What should have been a joyful celebration ended with a medical emergency that sent Thomas to the emergency room on our wedding night. It was a chaotic and humbling beginning that forced us to learn very early that marriage would require ownership, grace, and resilience.
Over the years that followed, life continued to test our relationship in ways we never could have anticipated.
A Marriage Shaped by Real Life
Our journey has included seasons that placed enormous strain on our relationship and our family.
We navigated nearly $800,000 of debt from a family business and spent nine years working together to become debt free. We walked through devastating family trauma, including the murder of a sibling, supporting loved ones through addiction, and taking in four additional children early in our marriage.
We experienced the pressures of major life transitions — relocating internationally to Nigeria and back, navigating job uncertainty, and partnering with our family business working tirelessly to get Thomas’ parents out of the red.
We also faced deeply personal struggles inside our marriage itself, including pornography addiction and an extramarital affair that shook the foundation of our relationship.
There were seasons when it felt like we were simply going “around the same mountain” again and again — repeating the same arguments, the same misunderstandings, and the same hurts without knowing how to move forward.
For the first twelve years of our marriage, we often felt stuck in painful cycles.
But those struggles became the beginning of something important.
The Turning Point
Over time we began to realize that our conflicts were not just about the issues we were discussing.
We were caught in patterns of communication and reaction that were shaping our relationship without us fully recognizing them.
When those patterns stay hidden, couples often find themselves repeating the same painful conversations again and again.
But when those patterns become visible, change becomes possible.
Through counseling, communication coaching, faith-centered growth, marriage retreats/conferences, and programs like Dave Ramsey’s financial framework, we began to learn new ways of responding to tension, rebuilding trust, and strengthening the foundation of our marriage.
We began to see that relationships change not simply by trying harder — but by learning healthier ways to communicate, respond, forgive, and grow together.
A Marriage That Grew Through Forgiveness
One of the most important lessons we learned along the way was the power of both forgiveness and boundaries.
Healing required extending grace where deep hurt had occurred, while also establishing healthier patterns that prevented continued harm.
We made a conscious decision that the word “divorce” would no longer be part of our vocabulary.
Instead, we chose to fight for our marriage by learning to war together against anything that threatened it.
Today we describe our relationship as an inseparable union mindset — a commitment to grow together through every season rather than turning away from each other when life becomes difficult.
30+
Years of Marriage
One of the most important lessons we learned along the way was the power of both forgiveness and boundaries.
Our Family Journey
Our marriage has also been shaped by the experience of building our family.
We walked through years of infertility and the grief of miscarriage, learning firsthand the emotional weight that reproductive challenges can place on a relationship.
Our family ultimately grew through both adoption and biological birth, and the international adoption process itself brought its own emotional and financial complexities.
These experiences gave us deep empathy for couples navigating unexpected life paths and the strain those paths can place on a marriage.
Why We Do This Work
Over the past 30+ years of marriage, we have come to understand something important:
Many couples love each other deeply but remain trapped in relationship patterns they do not fully recognize.
When couples learn to see those patterns and gain practical tools for communicating and responding differently, the relationship can begin to change in meaningful ways.
Today we help couples do exactly that.
Through faith-centered coaching and practical relationship tools, we help couples recognize the patterns shaping their relationship and begin building healthier ways of communicating, resolving tension, and strengthening their connection.
Our hope is that couples don’t have to spend years repeating painful cycles before discovering tools that can help them move forward.
We often hear couples say:
“I wish we had learned these things earlier in our marriage.”
Our Training and Approach
Our work is informed by Christ first, and then by both lived experience and professional training.
We are certified communication coaches who first applied these tools in our own marriage before sharing them with others. Over the years we have continued investing in counseling, coaching frameworks, and faith-centered relational development.
We believe that healthy marriages grow through a combination of:
Honest self-awareness
Practical communication skills
Faith-centered perspective
Vulnerability
A willingness to keep growing together
The Impact of a Healthy Marriage
Strong marriages do more than improve the lives of two people.
They shape the emotional and spiritual environment of families and influence generations to come.
When couples learn to navigate tension, communicate clearly, and extend grace toward one another, the ripple effects often reach children, extended family, and entire communities.
That is why we care deeply about helping couples grow, heal, and build marriages that thrive.
